Santa Maria Novella (1456-1470)
by Leon Battista Alberti
@Florence (13 nov 1456 anni – 22 dic 1470 anni)
Descrizione:
Alberti designed a Renaissance facade for an existing Gothic building.
It was commissioned by the Rucellai family.
Based on a series of mathematical rations:
-Height equal to width.
-Two squares on the lower part.
-Top of the entablature exactly half of the total height etch.
Many classical details - scrolls, pediment, capitals etc.
Some medieval elements - pointed arches of the ground storey and the extensive use of coloured marble.
Not closely based on any Roman building - but the doorway is clearly modelled on the entrance to the Pantheon.
Alberti here deals much more successfully with the problem of a two storey classical facade than he did in Rimini - both storeys are classical in design.
This facade proved very influencial on other Renaissance architects.
