- Citizens were experiencing ‘war weariness’ as the casualties and enormous cost of World War I began to take its toll
- 4th February 1917 blizzards froze the railway system which prevented fuel and flour supplies
- After rationing was announced on the 19th panic buying occurred which worsened shortages and left the poor without food
- Putilov factory was locked out which threw 30,000 people onto the streets
- Protests for International Women’s day occurred
- Students and shopkeepers joined the demonstrations
- Cossacks easily overwhelmed
- Tsar remained unaware of the seriousness of the riots as the police and army generals had been embarresed about losing control
- Provisional Committee is formed by 12 members of the Duma who refused the Tsar’s demand to abdicate
- One day old Committee publicly announce themselves to be the Provisional Government 28th February
- Tsar orders General Khabalov Chief of St Petersburg Military District to forcibly suppress the disorder
- Mutinies begin in the Petrograd barracks and the Volynsky Regiment causing the army to side with the peasants for fear of being accused of treason
- This meant that the Tsar would struggle to bring in more troops as the new troops may also change sides
