Grain requisitioning
- Rich peasants labelled 'kulaks' and accused of hoarding grain
- Cheka sent to 'kulaks'
- Incentives to work removed as grain requisitioning occurred and money was abolished, therefore peasants reverted to subsistence farming
- Grain requisitioning between 1919 - 1920 exceeded harvest surplus by 30%
- Average peasant household forced to give up 118kg of food
- 1920, 8,000 requisitioning members murdered by peasants
- 10 million people died during the Civil War with 9.5 million of those due to famine/ disease
- Cannibalism occurred in the countryside
- Peasants seized land
- Grain harvests between 1920 - 1921 50% of 1913 levels
- Little manufacturing goods to buy as most used by Red Armies
- Black market thrived
