Soviet-Afghan War (24 dic 1979 anni – 15 feb 1989 anni)

Descrizione:

A nine-year guerrilla conflict against Soviet Union military occupation was known as the Soviet-Afghan War. It was fought between the Soviet Union, the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (which the Soviet Union had enormous influence over), and the insurgent factions collectively known as the Mujahideen. The KGB was responsible for inciting the conflict; with them breaking into the Afghan presidential palace and assassinating the president and his cabinet, they helped to organise a coup backed by Moscow in order to install Babrak Karmal as a new puppet leader. The Soviet Union believed that by invading Afghanistan, they would be forced to forge closer ties with the country, and was one of the key motivations for the invasion. The Soviet Union, however, suffered a long-lasting defeat as a result of this absolute disaster of an invasion.

Approximately 15000 Soviet soldiers and a staggering 2 million Afghan civilians perished in the Soviet-Afghan war. Human rights abuses during the Soviet-Afghan conflict included indiscriminate bombing, massacres, and the torture of Afghan civilians. Even though the War came to an end in 1989, its consequences can still be felt today. As a direct result of the conflict, once the Soviet Union withdrew and departed Afghanistan, a haven for terrorism was established, which would foster the ascent of Osama bin Laden, who before his death in 2011 was responsible for the killings of thousands of people and terrorist attacks like 9/11. The Soviet Union suffered a great deal from the conflict with Afghanistan, and the Soviet Union's defeat in Afghanistan served as one of the final straws that caused it to fall apart.
