The Old Sacristy of San Lorenzo (1421-1428)
by Filippo Brunelleschi
@San Lorenzo, Florence (22 gen 1421 anni – 7 ottob 1428 anni)
Descrizione:
The gaps at the angles of Brunelleschi's plan were filled with two sacristies.
The Old Sacristy on the Northern side was designed by Brunelleschi.
The New Sacristy on the other side was not built until the 16th century.
The Old Sacristry is square in plan, with walls of he same height, so the building is a perfect cube.
One wall of this opens to a small altar-room, also square in plan.
The two spaces are each covered with a dome.
In the corners of the Sacristy are pendentives, curved triangles that project inwards from the corners of the room, turning the square plan into a circular one - on which the dome rests.
This idea is present in Byzantine architecture - but Brunelleschi cannot have seen any examples of this.
He may have been inspired by the Roman temples of Minerva Medica, which has a broadly similar design.
The dome is hemispherical - like classical domes - but unlike Roman domes it has ribs.
