San Lorenzo (1419-1480s) by Filippo Brunelleschi @Florence (2 nov 1419 anni – 8 giug 1480 anni)

Descrizione:

San Lorenzo was the parish church of the Medici family.

Brunelleschi drew up plans for its rebuilding in 1419.

The basic plan was typical of Gothic churches like Sta Croce and S. Maria Novella - a Latin cross-plan, However, Brunelleschi brought a new concern with proportion.

The basic unit of brunelleschi's plan was the square of the ctossing.

-This square was repeated to form the trancepts and the choir.
-The nave is four squares long.
-The ten chapels around the transepts are squares 1/4 the size of the crossing.

The crucial square is that of the crossing.

It is essentially a replication of a Roman basilica, which was a secular meeting room, except that the churhc has transepts.
