Vesalius (1 gen 1514 anni – 1 gen 1564 anni)
Descrizione:
Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) was a Late Renaissance, Paris-educated physician who became a lecturer at the age of 22. He was a surgeon who revived Galenic methodology with an emphasis on doing hands-on work oneself (often on executed criminals). Ultimately, his work (and the revival of Galenic observational tradition) led to the disproval of many Galenic thoughts that had been engrained in society throughout the Middle Ages with the spread of translated works. Furthermore, he represents a shift away from Avicenna (a 10th century physician philosopher and Galenic translator) and Mondino educators (who he viewed as disdainful with less to offer than butchers). In 1543, he published his famous anatomy text, De Fabrica. The piece reunified the hand and mind through empirical observation, with Vesalius often rationalizing his thought process as a return to thorough understanding, with reference to the three ancient schools of medical understanding (diet, drugs, and surgery) that often interacted or worked in conjunction with each other. While he did directly disprove or go further than Galen in understanding the body (who he boasts did no work on humans or on the uterus), he also still repeated some errors (such as continuing to accept the theory of pores between the heart’s ventricles, even with no direct observation).
