Humorism suggested that all diseases stemmed from an imbalance in the 4 humors: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. It was believed that health was when the humors were in a perfect balance and that disease resulted from any one of them being deficient or in excess. Health could be restored by balancing the humors with a physician. The practice of bloodletting was commonly used when patients had flushed faces or were spitting blood. Treatment was also linked with the seasons. For example, bloodletting was most popular in the spring, and patient records at Mass. General hospital indicated an increase in this procedure during that season.
