Galen (1 dic 129 anni – 1 dic 216 anni)
Descrizione:
Galen of Pergamon (129–c. 200 CE) was a Greek physician and philospher who studied in various schools of thought throughout his medical education. Galen’s primary goal was to provide an explanation for the body—what the heart, mind, and other organs do and how they work together. To do so, he dissected animals, applying much of this knowledge to the human body leading to a conflation between animal and human anatomical structures. Thereafter, his findings remained largely unchallenged or denied for approximately 1,500 years, or until the contributions of Versalius.
As mentioned previously, Galen studied many, often differing, schools of thought that influenced the way he imagined and practiced medicine. Most significant at this time was the debate between rationalism and empiricism in medicine, which Galen was also interested in. He agreed with the Rationalist position on the value of theory and established teachings for offering treatments. However, he also integrated Empericist teachings into his practice by observing and interacting with the body to further understand and treat ailments. Galen believed that each sect was fair on its own, but simply not enough to explain the complexity of the discipline; as such, he took it upon himself to build a complex middleground, employing observation and theory to his practice.
