Published A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy (1859) and Volume 1 of Das Kapital (Capital: The Process of Capitalist Production) (1867). Volumes II and III were published posthumously in 1893 and 1894 respectively; Frederick Engels edited drafts and notes into the two volumes. A fourth volume, commonly known as Theories of Surplus Value, was similarly compiled and edited by Karl Kautsky and published in three volumes between 1905 and 1910. However, Kautsky edited these volumes relatively extensively, and versions conforming more to the original did not appear until the late 1970s. Volume III of Das Kapital deals with rent extensively, as does Theories of Surplus Value. As early as 1857, Marx drafted an outline for this project; it consisted of six volumes, with Volume II entirely devoted to landed property; but by 1865 he had pared this down to four volumes, none of which focused solely on landed property.

Marx's version of the labor theory of value emphasized socially necessary labor, rather than embodied labot. He extended and somewhat corrected Ricardo's theory of differential rent. He also developed two additional forms of rent: absolute and monopoly rent.
