He was the first "Italian" patriarch after centuries of Germanic prevalence. But it would be more significant to point out that he was the first to be elected through the exercise of the right of the papal reserve, clearly aimed at removing a powerful and rich episcopal see from imperial influence.
He was born of Lando di Montelongo, belonging to a family related to the Counts of Segni , to whom Pope Innocent III [1] , cousin of his father, also belonged. The family was originally from Montelongo (territory between Ferentino and Alatri [2] ). He was first papal legate in Lombardy from 1238 , where he led the coalition of Guelph cities against Emperor Frederick II . In 1247 he was sent by Pope Innocent IV to Parma to lead the defense of the cityin the siege that ended in February of the following year with the victory of the Parma people. In 1251 he was nominated patriarch of Aquileia (although his consecration would have to wait until 1256 ); here he led the Guelph faction against the allies of Frederick II, in response Corrado IV (heir and son of Frederick II) incites the Istrian municipalities to revolt.
Gregory also worked to preserve and strengthen the territorial and spiritual integrity of the Patriarchate: he participated in the crusade against Ezzelino III da Romano , being present in person in the defense of Padua (September 1255 ) and sending troops to the crusaders until 1257 ; he also managed to occupy the Austrian enclave of Pordenone ( 1262 ). Once the threat posed by the Ghibellines and particularly by Ezzelino ceased, he faced Ulrich III, Duke of Carinthia and Alberto I of Gorizia, who had Alberto da Collice, vicedominal bishop of Concordia and his retinue assassinated at the Medea hill (1268 ) and captured the patriarch in Villanova dello Judrio (20 July 1267 ), freeing him only on 27 August after he was granted impunity and obtaining a peace agreement ( 1259 ).
Gregorio did not forget the insult but died while he was engaged in military operations against Alberto himself. He also signed an agreement in 1268 with the Serenissima in which the borders of the respective appurtenances in Istria were fixed , a territory that was long disputed between the two states. In terms of internal politics, the patriarch granted the castle of Cassacco as a fief to the noble family of Montegnacco ( 1254 ) and a market in Tolmezzo ( 1258 ).
