Israel believed that after the 6 day war they had enough territory to have a secure border, if the Arabs attacked they'd be able to absorb it and respond before they were overrun. This war proved them wrong. Sadat wanted to regain the Sinai and his peace treaty offer was refused by Israel, so he began to plot for war. Egupt and Syria launched coordinated attacks, yet within 2 weeks Israeli forces were winning the fight and the Soviet Union realised this, rearmed Egypt and the UN came up with 338 to shut it down before it became a 'superpowers contest'.
