Extended accounts of Jesus’ deeds and sayings | Gnostics | Docetics | Jewish-Christians (1 gen 50 anni – 31 dic 199 anni)

Descrizione:

Extended accounts of Jesus’ deeds and sayings (amongst which are the “gospels”) begin to be written, and continue to be produced throughout the time period. It is by no means clear that the canonical gospels were “earliest”, nor are we able to clearly isolate and trace all of the preexisting oral/textual sources which may have contributed to these writings.

These works include gospels and other works known from antiquity (i.e. quoted or referenced by orthodox church fathers), some quite popular, which present alternative versions of Jesus’ sayings, deeds, and/or the events or people associated with him. They also include gospels and other works unknown from antiquity (i.e. discovered via archeological serendipity), also presenting alternative Jesus narratives or unique blends of canonical and unknown traditions. Some of these works are substantial, yet were it not for lucky finds at places like Nag Hammadi and Oxyrhynchus, we’d never even know that they existed. This ought to humble any strong claims to complete understanding of the rich diversity of early Christian literature and thought.
