The first large period of religious revivals in American Christian history. It was characterized by widespread revivals, a sharp increase in the interest of religion, a profound sense of conviction and redemption on those affected, an increase in evangelical church membership, and the formation of new movements and denominations. This awakening was specifically affected by "Frontier Revivals" and religious men like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. Pastoral styles also began to change from theologically dense sermons to religious freedom. This was also the first time that African Americans embraced Christianity in large numbers.
