The gospel that will be known as Mark is written. The author is a Greek speaker generally unfamiliar with Palestine and its customs. He portrays Jesus as a Hellenistic “divine man”, a frequently angry, magician-type with incomplete control over his superpowers, and a messiah in secret. There are clear references to the fate of the Herodian temple, setting the date of composition no earlier than 70 CE.

The question of whether the canonical Mark as we have it is a redaction of a longer version that contained more mystical or challenging content intended for a spiritual elite ("Secret Mark"), is an open one. This claim was purportedly made by Clement of Alexandria in a letter that was mysteriously lost after its discovery and viewing by multiple scholars.
