The Termination Policy (1 gen 1953 anni – 31 dic 1969 anni)

Descrizione:

The Termination Policy was introduced because the government realised that previous policies had failed to bring about assimilation. The timing of this policy was down to economic factors; the land which many Native Americans lived on was wanted by mining and forestry companies.

In order to end the reservation system that had survived, the government gave Native Americans the same rights as other American citizens. This ended the recognition of Native American tribes and saw proposals put forward to end the reservation system. Native Americans were encouraged to relocate by offering them accommodation and help in finding work but the policy meant the loss of lands and further disintegration of what remained of tribal life.
