Most Spanish and Portuguese colonies were given their independence by 1825 but the elites and the Creoles still had most of the power. Most of these areas were given freedom due to Napoleon's invasion of Spain (giving the throne to brother etc). Miguel Hildago and Simon Bolívar were important influences in freeing different nations. Simon Bolivar helped lead revolutions in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. With José de San Martin (bell guy), he also helped gain independence for Argentina and Chile. He wanted to unify all the nations into one "Gran Columbia," but failed :/
