Bloody Code (1 gen 1660 anni – 1 gen 1820 anni)
Descrizione:
The British legal system saw so many harsh laws and punishments introduced during this period, often for minor as well as major crimes, that it was nicknamed the 'Bloody Code'.
It came to be because of:
- new crimes
- a perceived increase in crime due to the printing press
- landowning politicians making laws to protect themselves
- the belief that removing criminals from society would prevent crime
When it ended, only murder and treason were punishable by death. Attitudes were changing; it was widely considered that punishment should be for reform.
