Johnson’s administration dominated the election.
This policy was similar to the the New Deal
Focused on Medicare and Medicaid to help people get medical attention when they need it. This got many people medical insurance that did not have it before this. Paid by taxes at first.
Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Helps fund education districts. Money for construction and for electricity and books and development and intervention and foreing language speakers and connection between district and parents. Mostly helped rural area schools. Helps bridge gaps within education for race.
Created HUD and transportation cabinet posts. The first African American cabinet member appointed to HUD.(T. Marshall)
Johnson passes major legislation towards equality
Johnson spent a large amount of money on the military. We get ourselves involved in Vietnam and other foreign issues. The foreign policy is a continuation of containment and the prevention of the potential domino effect of communism. There was a fear that if Vietnam fell into communism, so would the nearby nation. Democracy was seen as the end all be all. This ends up going very badly.
Blame for Vietnam issues falls on Johnson
Guns and Butter: The idea of doing both, fighting communism and helping people at home. However, this was not realistically possible. “Too much Butter, not enough Guns”. Johnson was spending way too much money that we did not have.
