Hammon was a third-generation enslaved North American of African descent from Oyster Bay. He was raised Christian, as he went through an awakening sometime in the 1740s. Afterward, Hammon became a local preacher in his African American Community. Hammon had personally come to accept his condition of servitude but encouraged younger African people to work for their gradual emancipation. He emphasized education and the development of Christian virtues as important means for these efforts.
