Following a dispute over the Chinese Eastern Railway, the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan come to blows in the Russian far east. The result is a shocking and humiliating defeat for Russia, which alarms western observers. Japanese victory was important in the history of imperialism as it showed for the first time a non-white nation defeating completely and in permanence a white one, showing a shift of powers away from Europe. In Russia, the defeat led to the Revolution of 1905, an abortive attempt to establish a socialist government that after a great deal of negotiation and violence is subdued. In Japan, although the treaty (negotiated by the United States) led to seizure of Port Arthur (which became Dalian) and the Kurils, the peace was not accepted wholly enthusiastically, due to greater terms being expected after crushing victories such as the Battle of Tsushima. This contributed to a greater distrust from Japan and the Japanese public towards the west in general and America in specific, who they saw as attempting to limit their imperial dominion.
