Pope Gregory I (1 gen 540 anni – 12 marzo 604 anni)

Descrizione:

Pope Gregory was a Pope who held the Papacy from 590-604. He is greatly beloved by the Catholic Church due to his missionary work and contribution to music.

A famous myth surrounding him involves the development of Gregorian Chant. It says that the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, rested on Gregory's shoulder and sang songs into his ear. These songs were written down and became the Gregorian Chant the church continues to practice to this day. This myth is easily debunked as music notation had not been invented in Europe at this point.

In actuality, Pope Gregory I was successful in gathering a decent number of chants during his work developing liturgy. It is believed he wished for a uniform song repertoire to be used by the church. However, it is through the myth that most plainchant gathered by Gregory is attributed to him.

Pope Gregory I was canonized as a Catholic Saint shortly after his death. He is the patron saint of musicians and singer in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, some Lutheran dominations, and some Protestant denominations.
