No military, economic depression.

Events leading into war:
1. Embargo: non-intercourse acts
2. Macon Bill #2 was passed by Madison: trade with one but block the other. Napoleon took advantage of us.

Immediate Causes of War:
1. War Hawks: Clay and Calhoun
Pushed Madison to war
2. National honor
3. Canada and Freedom of the Seas
War hawks wanted Canada
4. Tecumseh and Prophet
People wanted to kick out British who were living amongst the Indians, were scared that there would be attacks on the Eastern side of the U.S.

STATUS QUO ANTEBELLUM, returning to 1783 treaty

Winners of War of 1812:
1. Nationalism increased
2. Opened up new territory from Indians to expand
3. British and Americans become great friends (Rush Bagot Treaty)
4. Transcontinental Treaty (Adams-Onis)

Losers of War of 1812:
Federalists because Hartford Convention turned sour, looked like they were plotting secession
-Essex Junto: Extremists who opposed radicals in Massachusetts in American Revolution (Federalists)
