the Yalta Conference defined the terms under which the USSR would enter the Pacific Theater and further defined how Easter European states would be treated after the war. In exchange for joining the Pacific Theater the USSR gained the southern portion of Sakhalin, the Kurile Islands, a lease at Port Arthur, and a share in the operation of the Manchurian railroads. They agreed to include France in the partitioning of Germany and add them to the UN Security Council. Germany would also take on some, but not all, responsibility for war reparations. it was also decided that all liberated Eastern European states would be friendly to the USSR and that Poland would have Communists in the government. The USSR pledged not to interfere in the elections of these freed territories.
