The Numbered Treaties (1 gen 1871 anni – 1 gen 1921 anni)
Descrizione:
From 1871 through 1921, the Crown and First Nations signed a series of 11 treaties known as the Numbered Treaties. Between the Lake of the Woods (northern Ontario and southern Manitoba) and the Rocky Mountains (northeastern British Columbia and the interior Plains of Alberta) to the Beaufort Sea, the Numbered Treaties are in effect (north of Yukon and the Northwest Territories). The treaties granted territory for industrial development and White settlement to the Crown. Government negotiators made various promises to First Nations — both orally and in the written texts of the treaties — including special rights to treaty lands and the distribution of cash payments, hunting and fishing tools, farming supplies, and other items in exchange for their traditional territory. These conditions of agreement are contentious and up for debate. The Numbered Treaties continue to have legal and economical consequences for Indigenous peoples.
