-Era of good feelings: demise of the federalists briefly left the US with only one political party
-McCulloch v. Maryland: states could not tax, precedence of national law over state law
-Panic of 1819
-John Q. Adams negotiated treaties, Adams-Otis Treaty in 1819 gave them Florida from Spain
-US gained access to trade in South America
-Monroe Doctrine: policy of mutual non-interference, Europe stay out of the America and they would stay out of Europe. America could interfere in any conflict that could affect America in the western hemisphere. Appeared to work
-Most Europeans didn't have the money or power to challenge doctrine because of the fallout of the Napoleon wars. but Europeans weren't afraid of the American army
-Missouri was the first state to be made from the Louisiana Purchase
-Missouri Compromise: admitted Missouri as a slave state, carved a piece out of Massachusetts (made that part Maine) and made it a free state, drew a line along 36th parallel across the Louisiana territory (below, slavery was okay, and above slavery was not allowed) except Missouri was a slave state (sort of violated the compromise). Stalled the Civil war
