Meiji Restoration (1 gen 1868 anni – 1 gen 1889 anni)
Descrizione:
The Meiji Restoration was a period of Japanese reform and industrialization. In the late nineteenth century, Japan realized that they were behind in terms of modernity, and was inspired by other nations' industrialism such as British industrialism, and went through a time of changes. They fueled different industries such as shipyards and coal mining, but in vain, for the industries did not take off like they were supposed to. Japan then decided to power individual businesses, which finally brought Japan into the economic nineteenth century. In addition to economic reform, during the Meiji Restoration, Japan expanded militarily and politically. They went from barely even having a military to being the strongest military force in East Asia in a matter of years. As for the political aspect of reform, Japan did not get rid of its emperor, but it did introduce a cabinet and prime ministers. This is known as a bicameral (two chambers) legislature. As aforementioned, the British Industrialism had a major effect on the Meiji Restoration. Not only did this event inspire the Meiji Restoration, but they modeled their new military strategy after that of the British and other major European powers. However, these changes were not completely positive. Due to the rapid and large-scale changes, a wall of tension was built between Japan and neighboring countries. For example, Japan fought a war with both China and Russia. Both of these wars were won by the Japanese, which served as a symbol as to Japan's move into the modern age.
