Pullman Car Strike (11 magg 1894 anni – 20 lugl 1894 anni)
Descrizione:
Reasons for dispute: Because of the poor state of the economy, the Pullman Palace Car Company cut wages significantly and laid off 2,000 people, while not cutting costs. When workers attempted to protest to the company president, they were fired. In response to this, they walked off the job and went on strike.
Description of what happened: After they walked off, the ARU (American Railroad Union) got involved, and, by June 30, 125,000 workers on 29 railroads had quit work rather than handle Pullman cars. this severely hampered railroad traffic. Eventually, the federal government got involved, and troops were sent to get the railroads moving. In response to the troops, violence erupted among the protesters.
Resolution: With the violence, the leader of the ARU tried to call off the strike and get the protesters rehired. Instead, they began to hire nonunion workers. The strike waned and trains began to move again. The Pullman company agreed to rehire strikers on the condition that they never join a union. The strike cost the railroads millions of dollars, and the strikers lost more than $1 million in wages.
