Under the articles of confederation, the united states had several presidents The president’s job was to lead congress. The government under the articles was weak and needed to be reformed. Delegates reformed the constitution and had it include: a strong executive branch that was run by a single president. On April 30th, 1789 George Washington took office as the first president of the United States under the new constitution. John Adams was vice president. George Washington knew that his decisions as president would shape the American future. George Washington worked with congress to create an effective government. Congress added the bill of rights to the constitution to protect the rights of citizens. Also to balance the government aka to make sure one government didn’t get too powerful. Washington set the standard for how long a president should serve and for how the nation should relate to other nations.
