Manifest Destiny is the idea that the United States is destined- by God, its advocates believed- to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. A belief in Manifest Destiny helped convince Americans to support the war. It told people that it was okay to fight, kill, and take land from Mexicans or other non-Americans.
