America once again faced off against Russia when President Kennedy disclosed to the whole country that secret planes had discovered fully operational Soviet-bases with missiles in Cuba, with more coming. With Cuba's close proximity to the U.S., this posed a grave danger. The U.S. blocked off any and all military equipment to Cuba, and wouldn't allow Soviet ships carrying missiles to dock in Cuba. Negotiations began with the Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, and both sides came to an agreement. The Soviet Union took down their bases, while the U.S. pledged to not invade Cuba. The risk of nuclear conflict between Russia and America was greater at this time than during the entire Cold War. The realization that both sides would face heavy losses if they were to go to war caused a temporary cool-down of the hot, tense relationship between these two superpowers.
