The French Revolution was a movement from 1789 to about the beginning of the 1800s in which the Ancien Regime, France's despotic monarchy, was replaced with various different governments and then finally by Napoleon's despotic empire. The revolution began because of a lack of reform which was badly needed in France at the time. Various wars led to France's financial instability, and eventually the French people demanded that a meeting be convened, called the Estates-General, in order to develop suitable reforms. At this time, France was made up of three estates — the first estate, the clergy; the second estate, the noblemen; and the third estate, everyone else. At the convening of the Estates-General, third estate delegates formed a new government and soon overthrew the monarchy, ending in the beheading of the royal family.

One result of the French Revolution was a movement known as dechristianization, in which revolutionaries began replacing Christian ideals and symbols with enlightenment ones, sometimes by using force and violence.
