The American Revolution was a movement in British colonies in North America to become an independent nation. By the time of the revolution, the British metropole did not impose strict rules on its American colonies, as they weren't super valuable and were also very far away (this is called salutary neglect). However, after the French and Indian War led to increased taxes and British control in the colonies, and after several incidents including the Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre, the colonies declared independence and war on Britain. Eventually, America won and developed a democratic system of government.

Enlightenment philosophy had a large influence on America's ideals after and during the war of independence. These ideas, such as the lack of a state religion, found themselves in American law and were some of the founding principles of the country's democracy.
