A nephew to Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis Napoleon ruled France from 1848 to 1852 as the first and only president of the French Second Republic until he overthrew legislation through a coup and after a popular vote became emperor of the French Empire. During his reign, Napoleon III improved French agriculture, infrastructure, and the economy, as well as reconstructed Paris. He aimed to make France a once again great European power, and signed many trade agreements, brought France into the Crimean War, and assisted the unification of Italy. His downfall came after being defeat in the Franco-Prussian war, after which he was exiled to England.
