- Pictorial photographers believed that their field is more than just an objective, mechanical media.
- Photography could be used not just to document, but instead have an effect and a mood what could be translated.
- The technology was still in its early stages and many photographers felt that their lens recorded too much detail.
- To address this, photographers started employing several techniques to soften their images e.g. shooting through glass.
