Naomi Understands the Camps (1 gen 1942 anni – 1 gen 1942 anni)
Descrizione:
As Naomi grows older, she finally realizes the meaning behind the names of the work and concentration camps the Japanese-Canadians were forced to go to. Naomi quotes, "Sick Bay, I learned eventually, was not a beach at all. And the place they called the Pool, was not a pool of water, but a prison... Men, women, and children outside Vancouver, from the "protected area"--a hundred mile strip along the coast--were herded into the grounds and kept there like animals until they were shipped off to road-work camps and concentration camps in the interior of the province. From our family, it was only Grandma and Grandpa Nakane who were imprisoned at the Pool." (Kogawa 132-133). Naomi's grandparents were forced into these camps, as well as other Japanese people. This is evidences that Canadian's treated them harshly and viewed them to be unequal. This is an act of discrimination.
