Hans von Bulow (1 ottob 1830 anni – 1 giug 1894 anni)
Descrizione:
Hans von Bulow was a German conductor, virtuoso pianist, and composer of the Romantic era. As one of the most distinguished conductors of the 19th century, his activity was critical for establishing the successes of several major composers of the time, especially Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms. Alongside Carl Tausig, Bülow was perhaps the most prominent of the early students of the Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist and conductor Franz Liszt; he gave the first public performance of Liszt's Sonata in B minor in 1857. He became acquainted with, fell in love with and eventually married Liszt's daughter Cosima, who later left him for Wagner. Noted for his interpretation of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, he was one of the earliest European musicians to tour the United States.
The signal moment in Brahms Symphony 1's early history was its ecstatic acceptance by Hans von Bulow, likened by some to a religious conversion. Bulow was a charter member of teh New German School...Bulow made a speciality of Beethoven 9, which he once conducted twice on the same concert with the Berlin Phil so as to demonstrate the unworthiness of any other work to share billing with it. After hearing Brahms's First, Bulow rushed into rpint with an article hailing it as "the Tenth Symphony". He ended with the statement--"Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms do not alliterate with one another by chance" --that has lived on ever since in the catchphrase "the three B's," proclaiming a new holy trinity of classical music.
