The Mexican - American war was the first war that America fought on foreign soil. Mexico was not prepared for such a battle and President James K. Polk wanted some of the land Mexico owned so that the United States would reach the Pacific Ocean. After the United States won the war, the gain present day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. (Mexican-American War, 2009.)
