Romanticism (1 gen 1800 anni – 1 sett 1910 anni)

Descrizione:

Romanticism arose as a response to the rigors of Classical symmetry and order, emphasizing human emotion and feeling over rational thought. Romantic music as well as other artistic and literary forms took inspiration from interpretations of the otherworldly and the sublime. Romantic artists attempted to capture the depth of their feelings and subjective reactions to the world around them. Program music, grand opera, and the art song developed during the Romantic era.

While earlier Enlightenment thought had questioned long-held religious beliefs and praised reason, Romanticism elevated art, which gradually took on many of the trappings formerly associated with religious practices and institutions. Art came to be worshiped in public temples of art: that is, in newly built museums and concert halls. The arts could reach where reason could not and make people and society better, aesthetically, ethically, and even politically. And as repressive political regimes and increasing censorship closed off public expression in Germany, Austria, and elsewhere after 1815, the arts assumed greater urgency as a spare for private expression. The arts became a realm of fredom, and no art more so than music, whose exact meaning could not be pinned down and therefore censored. This faith in art would later be shattered by the wars and terrors of teh first half of the twentieth century. However, during what is sometimes referred to as the "long nineteenth century"--between the French Revolution of 1789 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914--- the redemptive power of art, and of music in particular, was widely believed.
