TheThirty Years War (1 gen 1618 anni – 1 gen 1648 anni)

Descrizione:

The second quarter of the seventeenth century was a horrendous period for the German-speaking lands, marked by a series of territorial, dynastic, and religious conflicts collectively known as the Thirty Years War. What had started in 1618 as an unsuccessful revolt of the Protestant nobility in Bohemia against the dominion of the Holy Roman Empire spread across Germany, leading to one blood-soaked battlefield after another. Although peace negotiations were pursued in the 1640s, hostilities continued off and on until 1648.

Powerful repercussions of this terrible war--which vastly weakened Austria, strengthened France, and devastated Germany--were immediately felt in the arts. The military successes that made France the richest and most prosperous land in EUrope laid the foundations for what the French still call their grand siecle, their Great Century. The impoverishing effects of the conflict on the arts of the German-speaking lands, on the other hand, were profound. THe courtly arts managed to hang on through tough times, although not without crucial changes.
