Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1 gen 1562 anni – 1 gen 1621 anni)
Descrizione:
Written keyboard works rooted in improvisatory practices.
Chief organist at Amsterdam's Oude Kerk for more than forty years. Published polyphonic vocal music in main genres and styles of teh late sixteenth century, most of it secular and to texts in international languages. His work thus combined old-fashioned vocal music and up-to-date keyboard compositions.
Associated with contemporary English composers, although he never met William Byrd. These composers wrote not just for organ but also for harpsichord and the smaller virginal and clavichord. Several of Sweelinck's pieces are found in a mammoth collection of English keyboard music known as the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
