Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1 gen 1712 anni – 1 gen 1778 anni)
Descrizione:
Enlightenment philosopher. IN his article on music from Diderot's Encyclopedia, he xpresses Enlightenment beliefs in the power of music to help establish order and virtue in society, which he believes derives from the ancient Greeks. He particularly emphasizes the need for composers of vocal music to craft their melodies to complement the meaning of the words and not to obscure them with overly fussy and elaborate arrangements. He sees in ancient music the emphasis on moving the soul, while he faults contemporary French music for simply "pleasing the ear." In this way, Rousseau lays out an argument that has continued among music theorists to the present day.
