Six months later, he returned and the guns of Perry's ships forced Japan's decision. After this, Japan soon after signed similar treaters with several European nations. Resistance to opening foreign relations was especially strong among the samurai warriors in two southern territories, Satsuma and Choshu. his forces collapsed, ending the shogunate system.
