Sir Charles Sherrington (1 gen 1857 anni – 1 gen 1952 anni)
Descrizione:
British Contemporary; close colleague of Ramon y Cajal
-Argued for the existence (and coined the term) of the synapse when he discovered that reaction time of reflexes were slower than what could be calculated using what was known about neuron speeds
-Used "spinal dogs" to factor in measurements of electrical charges through the neuron circuit
-Concluded that the cortex has an inhibitory effect on reflex action and the synapse plays a role in accurately calculating speed of electrical pulses through NS
-Mind behind reciprocal innervation, temporal summation, and spatial summation
-Concluded that summation must occur where the endpoints of neurons meet, aka the synapse
-Predicted the later discovery of neurotransmitters
