Parliament (which was radically Puritan) made a militia and Charles I assembled his for war.
Parliament convoked the Westminster Assembly to give counsel on religions matters. It adopted the Presbyterian form of government and called Parliament to establish that form for the Church of England, which it did. William Laud was executed in 1644.
After the Battle of Naseby (1645). Charles I was later captured and delivered to Parliament.
Parliament's army began to oppose Parliament because of the Presbyterian government (Puritans would not have the freedom they wanted). Thus, they purged Parliament (called Rump Parliament).
Charles I was beheaded in 1649.
After a brief period of the Protectorate, Charles II was given the throne, restoring the monarchy in 1660.
