Initiated the Enlightenment movement, Continental Enlightenment, and Rationalism (particularly Cartesian). Assumed that God's Word is not necessary to understand nature. Philosophy of systematic doubt except for that which can be known to be true (like geometry). Began with, "I think, therefore I am." From here, he argued for God's existence and then of the outside world. Also argued that humans consist of a part that thinks and a part that occupies space (though he did not describe how they connect; others would propose Occasionalism, monism, and preestablished harmony).

First to separate reason from faith. Contra Anselm and the confession of humanity until then.

Consciousness is a substance.
