Reformers viewed themselves as recovering what was lost rather than as innovators. Significantly impacted by Renaissance thinking (humanism), discovery of the New World, and the printing press.

Whole Period revolves around authority:
Church vs Individual
Church vs Scripture
Church vs State

Deals with four questions/issues: the nature of salvation, authority of Scripture, corruption of clergy, and who has access to God.

Reformation Period including English and Catholic Reformations resulted in:
Break from Medieval Catholic synthesis (unified Christendom is broken forever), expansion of the middle class (new view on work), and development of the nation-state in replacement of the feudal system (due partly to the challenge on RCC authority).
