Philip III was the son of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal and inherited most of the lands of his father. He ruled the Netherlands but was greatly disliked and eventually they revolted and in the Act of Abjuration, the States-General declared they no longer saw Philip III as their king which sparked a revolt. The Dutch won due to their growing economy and Spain's declining economic power. William I (William the Silent) started a revolt and managed to capture Holland and Zeeland and after his assassination, his son Maurice of Nassau continued the rebellion against Philip III. Eventually, Philip had to capitulate and the Netherlands was free to rule itself.
