Charles was a child of great fortune as his family inheritance granted him the titles of Holy Roman Empire, Archduke of Austria, Lord of the Netherlands, and King of Castile and Aragon. He ruled most of Europe and portrayed himself as a new Charlemagne. He had a special place in his heart for the Low Countries as it was his place of birth as well as a rich place for him to levy taxes to pay back loans he took from German and Italian banks. He was a great patron of the arts and was able to navigate the Reformation without it all collapsing on him.
