Yanek Gruener gets shipped to his first concentration camp. There, he finds that his uncle is there. His uncle helps him with as much as he can, but one day, his uncle got shot by the camp leader. After that, Yanek found a loose board in the bottom of his barracks, and he brings two other friends in it with him the next day. They stay for days, coming up for roll call, to not get caught, but then on one day, the camp leader comes around with dogs. They knew the dogs would find them, so when he wasn't looking, they got out, and told him a lie that barely kept them alive.
